Hello all,
I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to create a .PFX file whenever a
new certificate is issued? What I'm trying to accomplish, using the Windows
Server 2003 based Certificate Server Services, is to issue a public/private
key pair that the end-user can then import into any web browser of their
choosing. What I have been able to do is use either IE or Firefox to access
the web enrollment page, request a certificate, and then install it directly
into the browser. From there, using either the Certificate Management
snap-in or the functionality provided by Firefox, export both the private
and public keys into a PFX file. Although this process does accomplish what
I require, I was hoping that there was some way to generate the PFX file
right when the certificate is issued. I noticed that using the web
enrollment form, I can export the private key to a file when (what I think
is) the public key is issued and also saved to file. Is there a process to
combine these two separate files into a single PFX file?
Admittedly, it may be a misunderstanding on my part on how the certificate
import process works. I can import the generated .cer file into Internet
Explorer, but browsers like Firefox, Opera, and others all require the PFX
file format. I can't seem to get the non-MS browsers to read the .cer file
and import it properly. Is the private key included with the .cer file and
the MS browsers just support more file formats than the other browsers, or
is there something about the certificate import process that I'm not
understanding correctly?
Thanks,
