Looking at the Dell Latitude D630. Available screen options are WXGA
at 1280 x 800 and WXGA+ at 1440 x 900. I'm wondering if anyone has
used 1440 x 900 on that size screen and whether it would be a wise
choice?

There's a Dell group at *alt.sys.pc-clone.dell* where you would probably
find an answer sooner.

I'm using the 640M at this instant, with 1440x900 on a 14"
screen. It's brilliant, crystal clear, sharp as a razor. I did
some adjustments of font size, and that was that. Once you use
this you will never go back...

Yes, absolutely. There's really no such thing as too high a resolution
regardless of the screen size -- the only problems that come in are that you
may well have to adjust the default system font size to make everything "big
enough," and unfortunately some programs have minor glitches in that their
window layout is fixed and based on the default system font rather than one
that's been modified from the default. This is a problem in probably <5% of
programs I use on my laptop, and has been steadily decreasing as programmers
move to more sophisticated GUI libraries that do properly account for the
system font size.
