In WDS 2.x, I am a bit mystified by the readings in the Indexing Status box.
Currently, it says 155,582 files have been indexed, and 73,102 files yet to
scan, yet moments ago, the latter number was hovering around 10. In fact it
goes up and down constantly, often by huge numbers. Is this how it is
supposed to work, or is this a bug? If not, what is this box really telling
me?

Later I noticed that the files indexed tally began to decline. What gives?

When doing an incremental crawl WDS will note how many things have changed
and report that, as it crawls and checks sub folders etc it will find more
and that number will increase as it finds new things to index. So it's not a
bug but the first number you see isn't necessarily accurate either, it's
what it has in it's que at the moment.
