I have a Dell Inspiron 600m that is about two months old. When I try
to start the computer on battery power, Windows starts to load, but
immediately shuts down within a matter of seconds. The computer will
work without any problems when on AC power. I thought that the battery
might be low, but the indicator on the battery and in the computer's
power meter show the battery at 100%. This problem occured for the
first time yesterday. I had been using the computer on battery power
for a couple of hours, and then the computer shut down without any
warning. I know that the battery had to be somewhat depleted, but the
meters still showed the battery at 100% when I checked. I thought
after running the battery on AC for several hours that the battery
would recharge if low battery power was the problem, but I am still
encountering the porblem. Has anyone heard of this before? Any ideas?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Brian

There are a couple of possible root causes for this. The gas gauge IC
in the battery may be either bad or simply have corrupted memory - this
may be preventing the computer from charging the battery, since the
battery says "I'm full!".

However it is more likely that you have a bad cell. Try an experiment -
Reboot machine on AC, get into the BIOS setup screen and turn
brightness down as far as possible. Pull AC. See how long the system
lasts.

To further that idea, try removing the battery and reinserting, and then
attempting to fully recharge. Some laptops reset their state-of-charge
monitoring when the battery is removed, so if your battery is really
depleted it will get a chance to be recharged properly from that point.

If the laptop is only 2 montsh old, call Dell. Batteries are warrantied for
1 year.

Thanks for the suggestions. I should have called Dell to begin with,
but I thought it might be a problem other than the battery needing to
be replaced. I called Dell, and they are sending a replacement
battery.
