On the Motorola Q, Internet Explorer incorrectly indicates to the web
servers that the resolution of the device is 176x220, while in fact it is
240x320.

The "agent string" sent by Internet Explorer on the Q is: "Mozilla/4.0
(compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; Smartphone; 176x220)"

This means that some web-site will send web pages optimized for devices with
a narrower screen, that will not be optimized for the Q.

Other Smartphones with the same 240x320 resolution do not have this issue:

The "agent string" of the T-Mobile Dash is:
"T-Mobile Dash Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; Smartphone;
320x240)"

The "agent string" of the Samsung SGH-i607 / Cingular BlackJack is:
"SAMSUNG-SGH-I607/I607FG1 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE;
Smartphone; 320x240) UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0"

by the way, is the first number supposed to be the height, or the width?

there seems to be some inconsistencies there...

The first number is always supposed to be width.

thanks!

do you think that Pocket PC's (which have a screen that can rotate) will
correctly swap the agent's width and height depending of their screen
rotation status (landscape or portrait) ?

i'll try and report :)

of couse the answer is NO: (does not surprise me much)

even when in Landscape mode, a Pocket PC user-agent string still reports:
240x320

:(
