Hello...I currently own a Sony Vaio w/ Windows Media Center 2005 and it came
with a 200GB HD and I want to add an additional hd. So I bought a Hitachi
250GB SATA HD on sale at CompUSA for $99 after rebates. And I want to install
it properly but never have installed a hd in xp before.

And here is my question since my current hd has the letter "C" and my other
devices such as dvd-burner and dvd-rom has "D" and so forth. Does that mean
my new hd will not be letter "D"? The new hd will only be used as an
additional hd with 250GB of space for storage, whats the proper way to
install it, format partition and all? Thanks in advance!

Basically, just cable it up and power up the system. Once you're at the
Windows desktop, right-click on My Computer and select Manage. Then just
click on Disk Management once the dialog comes up. From there, you can
partition and format your new drive.

You can choose the drive letter for your new volume(s) in Disk Manager. If
any other device/volume currently occupies D:, you can move that to another
drive letter. Note, though, that this may break installed applications
which may have stored that drive letter. E.g. Windows stores an "install
source" and will likely have stored "D:" in your case. However, it
generally does little harm if that "install source" is no longer correct,
as Windows will be smart enough to search your CD/DVD-ROM drives if it ever
needs any files from the original Windows install CD. But other
applications may not be that "forgiving".

Regards,«

A quick Note:

Just a small warning !

You can search in this newsgroup on "Sony" and find my original entry.

Adding an additional drive will void your warranty with Sony and cancel your
on line and Phone support; and I am not joking.

I went ahead anyways as I do not need their support as I have been at this
business for a long while.

I had problems with simuliar Hitachi drive as the BIOS would not recognize
the sata drive. Some small difference , I think. You may not have this
problem.

It did recognized similar drives as the original in the SYSTEM (Western
Digital - 200gig) and I filled out the drive bays with this series of drives
(3) ; and it is working very well ! The BIOS found the drives and the OS MCE
auto connected them.

I also added a additional TV card (also voided the Warranty) - MCE 150 MCE
(I took out the Modem Card).
