If I know that what I am looking for can only be in
certain folders, is there a way of telling MSN
Desktop Search to limit the results only to those
folders, for that particular session?

If you want to limit results to certain folders (for instance, only find
results in the "C:\music" folder), you can try using the Advanced Query
Syntax.

for example:
coldplay folder:"C:\music"
or
coldplay under:"C:\music"

Whatever you put immediately after the "under:" option will be searched
against the "folder" column. So you could search for:
coldplay under:"music"
and get results that are under any folder with "music" in the name.

Also, I should point out that there's currently a small quirk/bug in the way
the indexer processes some folders. It has to do with "special folders" like
My Music and Desktop. Instead of "C:\Documents And Settings\Brandon\Desktop"
items on the desktop will be calaloged as simply "Desktop\foo.txt" and so on.
Same goes for "My Documents\My Music\foo.txt" - so searches that include
drive letters will often not work as expected.

Hope that helps.

Great! Thank you very much. Good you mentioned
the bug with special folders, because otherwise I would
have concluded the advanced syntax doesn't work.

BTW, if you have renamed a special folder (in my case
the My Documents is called My Stuff), you still have to
use "My Documents" in the query syntax. The new name
(like "My Stuff") doesn't work either.

Now, wouldn't it be nice to have an advanced syntax
dialog to compose a query in a user friendly way? For
example, picking up the folder path in a browse dialog
rather than having to type (or copy/paste) long paths.

I'll second that :-)
