Even thought my SPV C500 phone says it has "windows mobile 2003 second
edition", the windows appear to be older version according to what I saw
online. Is there anyway I can upgrade it to newer windows mobile version ?

Also, most of the applications I downloaded, I could not install it on my
phone, it gave an error saying that "this application does not appear to be
a Windows CE application". Why windows CE ? I did downlaoded windows CE
application and still my phone complained about it.

I did find very few applications that I was able to install.

Your help is appreciated.

HM

No.

Windows CE is for PocketPCs, which are different from SmartPhones.

Thanks for the reply. For my second question, how would I know if a program
works on my phone or not ?

Windows CE is a highly customizable real time OS.

Both Pocket PC and SmartPhone are particular customizations of Windows CE
done by Microsoft.

Which means SmartPhone is running customized version of Windows CE.

You can upgrade OS to newer version if upgrade is offered by device
manufacturer and/or phone carrier.

Please check with them to see if update is available.

Applications designed for Pocket PC won't run on SmartPhone.

You need applications which are specially designed for SmartPhone OS.

Attempt to use PPC applications would most likely result in the error
message you're observing.

There's some confusion about what SmartPhone really is.

Microsoft SmartPhone is a device running SmartPhone version of Windows CE.

Often devices with phone capabilities are called Smart Phones regardless of
the OS.

For example, Treo 700w is commonly called Smart Phone, but it's in fact
Pocket PC Phone Edition.

Please don't be confused by that.
