I'm using a Toshiba Satellite M55-S3512 laptop.

I'm trying to put the display onto my TV via S-video connector. I actually
had it sort-of working very briefly -- i.e., I could see a small part of the
computer's desktop. Since then, nothing I've tried will put any display on
the TV screen. The TV does not detect a signal. When I go through the
steps that I think are necessary to activate a secondary video display, it
grays-out the secondary display icon. My first thought was that maybe the
cable is bad or the connector on the TV is bad, but another S-video device
(a laserdisc player) works fine with the same cable and TV input.

What do I need to do to put the picture on the TV?

Well, worse has happened. I somehow got the computer to display on the TV,
but now when I go back to the laptop, the resolution is reduced and the
icons and everything else are distorted horizontally.

Your zeroth problem may be that your computer has to be hooked up to
your TV set (and the TV powered up) _before_ you turn your computer
on.

And the latest video drivers, and proper playback software, and all
that, but start with the above...

Thank you. I have it working, and I think I have a good bit of it worked
out, including the display issue mentioned in my other post. You raise a
good point, though. When it finally started working, it may have been
because I had rebooted the laptop.

You have a laserdisc player? I haven't seen one of those since about 1985.
