No problem- I should've answered the question you meant to ask, rather than
the one you a ked! ;-) Rather than save your device files as .rtf, just
save them as .doc and .xls, not .docx and .xlsx. In Word (on your device)
hit Menu/Option and change the default template to Word 97-2003 Document
(.doc)- now all new documents will be saved in .doc instead of .docx. At
your leisure, open any .docx fileson already on your device, and re-save
them in .doc format and delect the docx version- at your next sync, you'll
have only .doc files on the PC.
