Hi Guys,
I'm sure you'll easily be able to answer this one because I'm so
ignorant about this kind of thing and I think my question is probably
dead easy to answer.
About 10 years ago I put a small website on my free space at my ISP.
However, the address to my website was ridiculously long, i.e. like:
http://www.very-long-isp-name.com/my-long-name/index.html
SO . . . I bought a simple domain name for myself from a company called
Network Solutions and for a little extra I also bought "web-forwarding"
so that when people typed the new simple domain name in their browsers
they would be automatically forwarded to the actual site (with the long
name).
Well, things have moved on and this arrangement is no longer very good,
for various reasons. What I need now is ACTUAL web-space which has my
old domain name stamped on it.
I know that Network Solutions (who sold me the domain name) will do this
for me (for more money!) but what I want to know is this: can I find
some cheap web-space somewhere and have my old domain name "stamped" on
it?
Thanks for all assurances/ideas/advice.
Ed.

get a hosting account somewhere that meets your needs.
then use their nameservers for your domain name as ns.
any host you choose will give you the info you need to make the move.

Right, OK. "a hosting account" . . . am I right in thinking that's what
"web-hosting" companies are all about?
But "use their nameservers for your domain name as ns". What does this
mean? OK, I gather from what you say that "web-hosting" companies have
"nameservers". But how do I use them so that my domain name remains as
it is?
Thanks.

the host will now - and should be able to guide you through the process.
