What is the best way to connect a PC directly to a high-definition TV to
watch content?

It all depends. Firstly it depends on what connectors you have available on the
TV & your PC. In theory HDMI or DVI>HDMI will provide the best picture quality
but some TVs give a better picture using VGA or component,

what kinds of connections does the TV have? do you have a Vista
computer with OCUR/DCT?

Digital is best. HDMI, DVI, then component.

The laptop is running VISTA Home Premium and has a HDMI port. The TV has VGA
and DVI inputs.

Then an HDMI-> DVI cable or an HDMI>DVI converter & a DVI>DVI cable is what you
want. Don't forget that you will need an audio feed to the TV also.
