I installed Windows Search only because upon installing OneNote 2007,
I was instructed that OneNote requires Windows Desktop Search for many
parts of its functionality. I normally use Copernic Desktop Search 2
for searches on my PC.
I have no specific objections to having WDS running concurrent with
Copernic - I certainly have the storage room, as well as the
processing capability on this machine.
My problem lies in that Windows Desktop Search is continually active
in one way or another. I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking rather than my
keyboard as my input method due to a disability. Since installing WDS,
Dragon NaturallySpeaking continually loses focus in Word 2003.
Dictation can proceed, but neither my cursor nor any highlighting in
Word 2003 and Outlook 2003 (using Word as an editor, as required by
Dragon NS) are visible, making dictation extremely difficult.
Pausing/suspending indexing in Desktop Search does not help, as the
SearchIndeser process still runs and steals focus. SStopping the
SearchIndoexer process in the Windows Task Manager is unsuccessful
because Windows Search runs as a service, so ending the process in
Task Manager lasts only about 30 seconds - then the Search Indexer
service is automatically restarted.
I manually stopped the service, thinking I would simply start it again
later and let WDS index when I am not at the PC. But the service
restarted automatically.
Next I stopped the service again, and this time set the Recovery tab
options from "Restart the service" after the first and second failures
- the default setting - to "Take No Action". Then I stopped the
service manually again. Much to my surprise, the service still
restarted in less than a minute. Super-Service... I needed Kryptonite!
I then checked the dependencies for the Windows Search service, and
found that it is controlled by Terminal Services>Remote Procedure
Call. I can't stop those services without severe consequences - too
many other applications and services would be affected. I don't know
the consequences of breaking the dependency of the Windows Search
service on the RPC service.
Can anyone give me some advice as to how I can fully suspend all
activity of the Windows Search service while dictating in Dragon
NaturallySpeaking? I realize that I can simple remove Windows Desktop
Search from my PC, but I am not certain how negatively that will
affect OneNote 2007.
Any help at all is greatly appreciated!
Jim

BTW - I apologize for all the typos in my above post. I obviously used
my keyboard that time - one-handed, which is all I can possibly manage
- and that always results in many typos.
