Because in technology, as elsewhere, timing is everything. Nothing
talks to anything else understandably, unless they are in the same
time. Can you talk to your sister on the telephone? Could you talk
to her, now, on the telephone, two hours ago? Such is the problem.
Usually in a computer or any other electronic device, there is a
central unit which distributes a timing signal; this signal may be
adapted, multiplied, split, diverted a dozen different ways, but the
adapted signals must always be designed to remain synchronous, or to
be able to be re-merged with appropriate "time stamps" so that
apparent paradox does not halt the devices' functioning.
As for interfacing a TFT display without a timing source, it depends
on what you want it to do. I've seen toilets used as flower pots, but
this was not their original designed function.
