Subject is a Sony Vaio F160. Upgraded from the original 4GB Fujitsu disk
to a 20GB Hitachi DK23CA. Everything appears to work fine *except* the
disk access (activity) light is constantly on.

So, took out the DK23CA to check connectors and saw nothing amiss.
Reinstalled Fujitsu disk, and it behaves normally (access light on only
when disk is being accessed). Reinstalled DK23CA again, and the darned
light is again on constantly.

What am I missing here...? Is there a "fix" for this annoying behavior?

TIA for any insights.

Sepp

I had the same problem with a Travelstar drive in an old Sony of
mine - something about how the Sony registers disk activity makes the
new drive appear to always be running. As far as I know, there's no
fix.

Arghh! Not what I was hoping to hear, but thanks for sharing. I wonder
if this is a design feature of the Sony or of the IBM/Hitachi?

When we talked about it on the Sony list years ago, the consensus
was that there was a change to the drive specs that causes the
problem. After all, your VAIO hasn't changed - hard drives have.
