Ref the Hinge problem. I have 3 old NEC's 1 old Toshiba laptop etc.
I found that the Toshiba hinges hold up for years and years, but
the NEC's are breaking on me one at a time. I have 3 of em and
only one left that can open and close. The others I just opened
them to desired angle and used 5 min epoxy to seal them rigid.
Then my spouse sewed little pull over soft covers to prevent dust
etc accumulation. The rest of the laptops works great to this
day. I cant force myself to discard them. They are like old
friends.

I have the same broken hinge problem with my old WinBook XL3.
I've had it for years and it has been a very good computer, but
it is now limited to desktop use with the top in the open
position.

I'm looking for a replacement and have considered a new laptop
that I could use to replace both my old desktop and my broken
laptop computers.

What is the best choice in a replacement laptop that would
function well as a technical computer, not necessarily as a game
station.

Any notebook with a Core Duo, Core 2 Duo, AMD processor should work for
you. You task is to decide what you need in terms of HD, display,
graphics adapter, etc, and those are just about additional $$.
