I don't quite understand what you mean. ZWJ and ZWNJ affect only
adjacent characters. When you write, say,

‍ XYZ

then ZWJ has no effect on X. See

I think I was confused about the use of the ZWJ, so forget what I said
about the space. Never mind.

Yes, except that the first one is preceded (but not followed) by a
placeholder, the two are the same: a medial ha.

It seems that my message was not sent by Mozilla 1.7 as I had
intended. I give it a last try but we need not bother with
newsreaders here. Support for UTF-8 and bidirectional layout
isn't great in newsreaders (as opposed to web browsers).
