I was getting ready to back-up my MCE system using Ghost 9.0 (now that I
have no MS-DVR files in my shared directory). I noticed that the computer
reported that 32 GB of the hard drive had been used, whereas there were only
6 GB worth of files (even with all hidden and system files made visible).

While running a DEFRAG operation on the drive I noted that it spent a huge
amount of time moving a file called 00201372.DVR, yet I could not locate
this file. I even used a command-line-based file search and it came up with
an error message telling me that the program was attempting to DIRECTLY
ACCESS THE HARD DRIVE, which was not supported.

Clearly then there are files that are hidden even from the Windows
environment that use up a huge amount of space, and yet I couldn't find any
mention of these on GOOGLE. Does anyone know what they are, and whether they
should be using up as much space as they do? Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

I saw the same thing on Sunday when I started an image copy of the system. I
am using Norton System Works on the system and after I purged the Norton
protected files the disk usage went from 32 GB to 6 GB.

What does the Stream Buffer Engine actually use for its disk area? We often
wondered where all of the temporary data gets written. Could this file be
that space?

Have you tried a simple:

cd \
dir *.DVR /a /s /p

....? Of course it could also be that you don't have any access privileges
for the directory the file resides in...

Anyway, is there any third party tool installed on your machine which might
have created those files? Maybe some dvr-ms conversion utility, DVD burning
tool (e.g. from Sonic) you are using, possibly one that crashed during
operation?

Regards,«
