I've got a friend's Compaq Presario 2700 notebook, which began shutting down
unexpectedly. After several other efforts, I used the Quick Recovery CDs (3
of them) to restore the computer. The computer would not make it through
the restoration process. I tried it with and without the battery, plugged
in to the AC. Without the battery, it did *seem* to behave better. It
stayed on long enough to restore, and I was hopeful. But when it tried to
boot up after the restoration, it BSOD'ed on me. It will not get to
Windows.
My guess is bad hard drive or a heat problem. I work on computers, mostly
desktops, and I have tons of spare parts, but no notebook hard drives. So I
cannot thorougly troubleshoot the problem.
Any input appreciated.
Thank you,
jm

I would start with a bootable (floppy or CD) memory test like memtest86 then
test the hard drive similarly with the manufacturers diagnostics.

Please log in for more thread options Probably not a bad hard drive.
As to "heat problem", that could be. Often the cooling systems in
laptops get clogged with dirt/dust after 6 to 24 months and need to be
cleaned out. On some models this can be done from outside, on others
the laptop has to be taken apart.

Please log in for more thread options could be heat, but i've got it in a very cool environment. i blew it out
with pressurized air; it looks clean. i've got an external fan blowing
directly into the vents right now, but it's still rebooting. the cpu fan is
spinning, then slows down, then spins higher.
