VAIO VGN-A117S. XP Home, SP1 Bought s/h
On the advice of Sony support I used the recovery disc to solve a
problem with bluetooth failing to connect with any bluetooth
device, which was working perfectly apart from that one fault.

Unfortunately system now only boots as far as the XP Home logo.
just before the desktop display. then crashes and starts
rebooting again, then cycle continues. Boot, crash, etc etc.

Support tell me that my particular model should have 2 discs. One
to recover and another to install all the s/ware. I only have 1
disc, which again according to support, should ask for disc 2 to
be inserted after recovery. Mine doesn't. It calls for the system
to be restarted, and then starts the cycle mentioned. Looks like
I may have a faulty recovery disc, (which was still sealed in
it's jewel case before I opened it, so had no damage at all) or
it's not the right one for my m/c.

Sony want £35 for another set of discs and can't say that it will
sort the booting problem. An alternative offered was to have the
m/c picked up and repaired, which would cost a minimum od
£188.00.!

I was thinking that if someone had the discs, and was willing to
burn copies for me, I'd be quite happy to pay a reasonable sum
for them, through PayPal, or send a cheque.
TIA.
Mike.

If you have a DVD, then there should be only one, AFIK. A CD set is
more like 6-12 CDs.

You should *boot* the recovery disk and not run it from XP. Can you
boot to Safe Mode (F8 key repeatedly at power-on)with the current XP
install? If you can then you can install drivers from the recovery CD,
I believe. Can you enter BIOS setup and check settings like HD size and
RAM size? Does a Linux Live CD (Ubuntu, Madriva, etc.) boot into Linux?
You can usually download a Linux Live from one of the Linux vendors.
This will confirm that the hardware is not a problem.

Or, boot into the recovery disk and try again.

Using the serial No. Sony support have assured me that I should
have 2 CD's. A recovery disc and an apps disc. I am reasonably
sure though that only one was supplied when the m/c was bought,
and it's the one I have.

There is no current install. The recovery disc has wiped the OS
from the hard drive

This is a Sony laptop bought with preinstalled Home XP and a few
apps. Norton Internet Security etc
The BIOS is very basic AMI Megatrend with few changeable options.

Tried that several times. Result is still the same.
Thanks.
Mike.

Well, given your response, purchasing the "complete CD set" is a given.
