Just went through this myself, and got a little help from MS techs. I had a
number of devices that didn't work any longer, and I suspect some bad driver
updates via Windows Update.
The solution was to un-install everything from the PC, but I didn't hard
reset the device. Part of the trick though was to display non-present
devices in device manager. The menus let you display hidden devices but not
non-present ones. You do this by setting a switch via the command line
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
cd C:\Windows\System32
start devmgmt.msc
The last two lines just open device manager. Then also, in then window,
click "Show hidden devices" on the View menu in Device Manager.
In various areas, Portable Devices, Networking, etc, I found things like
Pocket PC, PocketPC USB Sync, and Microsoft Windows Remote Adapter. I got
rid of any device like those. Then I went to remove programs in the control
panel and got rid of both Windows Mobile Device Center and WMDC Update.
Rebooted and connected my WM device and it reloaded drivers and then
reloaded WMDC and all is fine. I had tried dumping the drivers initially and
WMDC seperately with no luck. I also had not thought about the non-present
devices. All together it worked for me.
