Ok so this will sound crazy but give it a try....

Uninstall everything and run hwclear again
Shut down your computer and power it off...I mean NO power. I'd even
unplug it.
Take the 1600 OUT of the computer.
Wait. Seriously, wait. Give it a couple hours.
Install the card into a DIFFERENT PCI slot if you have it

Reinstall everything and see how it goes.

Have you tried just using System Restore to roll back to a date previous to
the problem?

Wish I could. This system was just created yesterday, there are no
restore points early enough. The previous system, for reasons I'm
still trying to understand, had NO restore points. I tried but they
were all gone and it was a system that had been up for months and had
been restored before.

I'm suspecting the Hauppauge driver failure, when the driver install
locks up the PC and I have to boot into safe mode and delete the
Hauppauge card before booting into normal mode I'm finding many things
changed once I get the system booted. Mouse settings are gone,
keyboard keys are no longer assigned, etc.

I have checked restore points on this system and they still exist but
there's none earlier than this morning, none before the updates were
installed.

Since I had the same problem I just dropped the ASUS board back into
the computer and re-installed Vista Ultimate 64 from an Acronis backup.

Here's what happened:

A. System restore is OFF! That explains why I couldn't restore to a
point before the updates, I don't know if Acronis does that or what,
the previous install of Vista Ultimate 64 was an Acronis Image also,
but I'm sure System Restore did work at some earlier time?

Of course I've turned it on......

B. The Hauppauge card works perfectly of course since the latest
updates aren't installed. I'll go ahead and install them the next time
they're offered but I'll create a restore point before I do and won't
waste any time getting rid of them if they kill my Hauppauge card again
but.... I did install a couple today and all is well so maybe MSFT has
removed an update or fixed one? The next round of updates will tell
the story...

Hi

I have the exact same card, Hauppauge HVR 1600 and Vista 64bit, so I have
the same Beta driver that you do so it works with 4G's or more of RAM.
But I have had no issues at all with the latest updates and that card &
driver, so I think it's something else that was affected possibly.
Since we have the same card and driver and I have all current updates, it
can't "bomb" the Hauppauge card/driver or I would be suffering the same
effect as you but I'm not so....
