Hauppauge HVR 1600 and Windows updates? XS11E 07-07-2008

I was running Vista Ultimate 64 and using Hauppauge's 64 bit beta
drivers and all was fine until a few days ago, I installed some updates
and couldn't reboot the machine when told to do so, the green scrolling
indicator would freeze, then the screen goes black and only power off
will do anything. Several tries, same results.

OK, BTDT, rebooted into safe mode, open device manager and delete the
Hauppauge card and reboot. It reboots but can't install drivers for
the Hauppauge card, trying to install the driver results in the PC
freezing. Tried several times using HW Clear, etc.

No success.

For some time I've been meaning to go back to original so... I put the
HP motherboard back into my HP Media Center M7750N and did a system
recovery back to Vista Home 32. The Hauppauge card installed and all
went well and then...... Windows update had a bunch of updates,
installed them and no Hauppauge card, same behavior as described in the
first paragraph above.

So it seems like the current batch of Windows Updates has a bomb that
kills the Hauppauge card, it's done it twice for me on different MBs
and different versions of Vista.

Anyone else have similar problems?

Windows Update often has out of date updates or ones that are incompatible
with many user's configurations.
Use Safe Mode and download and install the latest Vista64 drivers from the
Hauppauge Website or reinstall the ones you previously installed and try
again.

A. Installing in safe mode doesn't work, the driver installs as it
should but then rebooting shows the card as no driver installed.

B. As pointed out in my post, I have tried to reinstall multiple times,
using many different methods in two different OSs with two different
motherboards.

I appreciate the help but what I most need is to identify the update
that's causing the problem, since it downloaded around 70 updates it's
going to be very hard to determine which one is the one I need to
remove.

I've got 2 HVR 1600 in a PC along with 2 Avermedia 180A running Vista 32
with all updates installed and have not had the issues you describe. You
might check your video and chipset drivers to make sure that's not what's
causing the problem.

Unlikely, I'm currently running an nVidia chipset, previously an ATI
chipset. I'm not surprised at any horrible thing the nVidia chipset
does but the ATI should work...
