Problem description: Vista Media Center not able to set up Tv Signal properly

Configuration Details
Computer:        HP Mediacenter m8047c

Intel dual core 2.13Ghz processors
2MB RAM
500GB Hard disk
256MB Graphics card

Tv/graphics/sound hardware                        Driver Version [latest drivers directly from
the manufacturers of the cards]
Hauppauge HPR-1600 NTSC/ATSC/FM Combo tuner        1.62.25108.0
NVIDIA GEFORCE 7500LE                         7.15.11.6375
Realtek High definition Audio                        6.0.1.5502

Detailed problem description
I have connected my satellite set-top box to my Media Center computer via
s-video and coaxial video cables [output channel 3]. I am only using the
analog capabilities of the tuner. The ATSC digital tuner is not used nor
connected. When I run the TV set up process in Media Center no picture is
detected either
on channel 3 or on s-video. In order to check proper cable hookups and basic
TV tuner functionality I subsequently installed Hauppauge's WinTV2000
application just for testing. This application detects a clear picture on
both channel 3 and on the S-video input. My conclusion is that the cable
hookups
are perfect and the TV tuner card works flawlessly. By the way, Roxio also
picks up clear TV pictures in the video capture mode. It seems to me that
this TV tuner card is Vista compatible as advertised but not yet properly
integrated with Media Center.

I found a hot fix on the Microsoft support site in the Knowledge Base
article 920911 entitled:
"Windows Media Center does not correctly configure a combo TV tuner that
supports both ATSC and NTSC signals on a Windows Vista-based computer"
I implemented this hot fix, reran the Media Center TV signal set up [with no
other TV capture applications running in the background] and still no TV
signal was detected by Media Center.

I'm not sure if this is a Hauppauge (TV tuner problem) or a Microsoft (Media
Center) problem or an integration problem between the two. I have tested my
environment with three different sets of drivers [HP original, HP updated,
newest drivers directly from the manufacturers of the cards] with the same
results, Media Center does not detect a signal but my Vista-based
applications [Roxio, WinTV2000] have no problems.

What works in Media Center?
1. FM tuner (on the Hauppauge card)
2. Music library
3. Picture viewer

What does not work in Media Center?
1. TV tuner
2. Does not play any video files including Microsoft's own Windows media
video format [wmv], mpeg-2, mov, avi etc. I have a feeling that this is a
codec problem but I will address this in a separate problem report. None of
the demonstration videos [Bear , Apollo 13, National Geographic etc.]
supplied by Microsoft can be played by the Media Center. By the way, the
Windows media player plays all of these formats correctly so the correct
codecs are installed somewhere on the system but Vista Media Center chooses
not to use them. Brilliant!

Does anyone have a solution for the TV tuner conundrum?

Same computer, but "Tuner not found" problem.

While researching the problem for my HP, I found this site:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?docname=c01187871&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

The "services" step fixed my problem. Also, the video is sharper with the
drivers I installed from Hauppauge's site for my WinTV HVR - 1600 NTSC/ATSC
Combo.

Thanks Ron,

I followed the directions and my tuner still didn't completely work.
However, Media Center found the tuner correctly but it was not showing the
picture and sound in the little preview pane. Please note Media Center also
is not showing any videos I get the following error:

"Video Error
Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly.
Please restart Windows Media Center or restart the computer."

I am now convinced to that I have a good tuner and drivers but my video
codecs within media Center are messed up. Just as a safety measure I
uninstalled Roxio and am now looking for the appropriate codecs for Media
Center.

I installed ffdshow but I'm not sure if I did this correctly since I still
couldn't see any video.

Any help that you can give me regarding acquiring and installing the correct
codecs would be appreciated.

Thanks very much

I also used Hauppauge's cleaner program and installed their drivers. It
took more than one clean/reinstall cycles.

It seems that after 2 weeks of futile fiddling with drivers I found the real
culprit: LogMeIn (free remote control software), which I was trying to use as
a replacement for 3 devices:
1) the MCE remote
2) wireless mouse
3) wireless keyboard
My intent was to use my little XP based laptop to control everything on my
Vista based Media Center computer with LogMeIn Free. The concept almost
worked, one device instead of 3. It worked for a few hours but then LogMeIn
eventually messed up the video drivers in Vista. MCE stopped working for TV
and all videos giving me the error mesage that I now loathe:

"Video Error
Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly.
Please restart Windows Media Center or restart the computer."

I removed LogMeIn and MCE is working again.

Conclusion: LogMeIn and Vista MCE do not work together
