I wonder if anybody here uses some hard disk encryption software on a
laptop and could recommend any. With all those laptops stolen every
year, it's probably a good idea to have that in place. Most companies
now provide that on their employee-assigned laptops.

I use an encrypted file to hold sensitive stuff, but everything else is in
clear. The big problem today is having to hand over the key to the plod on
demand.

I won't recommend what I use because I don't believe it is still available.

if you're using windows, you can use NTFS encryption which is built in to
the OS. just right-click on a folder, select properties, select the
'general' tab then click 'advanced'

that's not a recommendation though - i've never used it and don't know
anything about it :-)

Not on XP Home it isn't.

I use TrueCrypt on my systems. It allows you to encrypt the entire drive or
you can do just part of a drive.

It's nice that you can create an encrypted section within an already
encrypted section and use a different password. That way I can give the PC
to Tech Support to install some new software and they won't have access to
my "business" files even if their action requires me to turn over the
"drive" password.

And the software is Freeware...

You can find it at www.truecrypt.org
