Had to post this in case there's any other frustrated MCE 2004 users
with the same problem.

For ages I've had problems with my HP MCE2004 system not recording
scheduled recordings from standby and giving error 771 and error 776 in
the event log when recording was failing. I've been troubleshooting
this for ages, and have eventually identified the source of the
problem. I originally though it was a dodgy driver for my USB dongle.

I wiped the computer (after several initial failed attempts to get to
the bottom of it) and installed one thing at a time, checking at each
point that the scheduled recording worked from standby. I installed SP2
(fine), all critical updates (fine), and finally identified the problem
as McAfee Virusscan Enterprise Version 8. I'd recently upgraded from
Version 7.1 (I get these free through the University I'm at under a
site license). McAfee virusscan v 7.1 does not cause any problems, but
as soon as I install version 8, MCE will not record from standby
anymore (but will if the computer is turned on). If anyone knows why
this is, or if McAfee do, I'd be interested to know why this is - but
the main thing is that the damn thing works again now!

This has taken me ages to find (despite the short post) and I hope this
post helps someone else! What a relief.

Sorry it came to this.

This is the second time that I've heard of a newer revision of AV software
interfering with MCE functionality.

Have you reported this to McAfee? I'll also pass this on to my MCE contacts
at Microsoft.
