Hi !
I have a big problem with my web site www.mihaiu.name.
Sometimes when I visit my page with IE6 the browser ask me to download
the index.html file ! The options are open, save, cancel, More Info.
When I say 'open', a list with windows applications is opened and I am
supposed to choose a program to open that file. If I open the file
with WordPad then I see that it is full of garbage. This is happening
only with Internet Explorer and what is worse ONLY sometimes. I am not
able to reproduce this all the time.
My HTML file looks perfectly legal. Besides that the site
has worked fine for almost 2 years now. I have the impression that
Microsoft has lately produced a patch that makes some problems, but
this is only a supposition based on the fact that Mozilla, Firefox,
Opera, Lynx, Netscape are working fine.
Can somebody tell me what I am doing wrong ?
Regards,
Razvan

You should always cite Web site addresses as URLs (in this example
http://www.mihaiu.name).

This is probably an IE bug. Your only real recourse is to report it to
Microsoft and hope they fix it in a reasonable time.

Sometimes? When does it, when doesn't it? Anyway, it works for me in
IE6.

I am not able to find a pattern for this problem. For example,
as I am writting this, from my computer from work I can access the
site only by typing
"www.mihaiu.name/index.html". If I do not type the file name
"index.html" it will ask me to download something. However this trick
does not work for other files: when I am trying to see my photos it
will fail EVERY time:
www.mihaiu.name/photos/index.html
I repeat, this is from my computer from work. When I'll get
home I'll check with my laptop to see what is happening.
The strange thing is that all the files seems to work if I call
them direclty; for example if I want to see my links I can do:
www.mihaiu.name/links.html
and it works without any problems (all the files, except the photos
-mentionated above - which do not work no matter what I do).
This is strinctly IE 6 behaviour. Firefox works without any
problems. Unfortunately almost everybody who is coming on my site is
using IE6 ! As a result of this, most people leave the site in several
seconds (I checked Apache's log files).
Does anybody know how to check the mime type that the server is
returning ? Perhaps Apache is misconfigured somehow.
My exact IE6 version is: "6.0.2800.1106IC", update version
"SP1;Q867801;Q823355". I suppose that the Q(s) are patches applied to
the browser. If somebody with the exact same IE can test my site I'll
be grateful.
Thanks,
Razvan

This worked fine for me in IE6.
My version:
6.0.2800.1106CO
SP1
Patches:11 of them
So, I doubt it is the mime type, then.
I bet it's a bug in your version of IE.

But I doubt they're all using the *exact* same version, patches and all.

So, that's okay.
Just for giggles, try repairing IE. Go to the Add/Remove Programs in the
Control Panel. Choose IE. There should be something there for repairing it.
Try that, reboot, and see if it fixes it.
