hi,
I'm getting sick and tired of all the problems I've been having
w/HomeSite, it crashes all the time, I get these weird errors with
code-nos. on them, etc.. it's just not very stable.. my Manager just
gave me a copy we have here of HS 5.5, same thing, I get same errors as
with previous version..
I was wondering, is there a free HTML editor out there similar to HS? I
know there must be a lot of them out there, I just want to find one
that's similar to HS (do NOT want a WYSIWYG one..) I use HS for
everything, HTML, css, java, you name it.. and would like to continue to
do so.. am interested mostly in the color-coding (yes, spoiled in that
regard, oh well, it makes it easier to debug..) the syntax-check, being
able to drag images so it creates img-tag, etc..
thank you...

Can't say how similar Komposer is, but it is oft recommended.

Have a look at Crimson Editor then? No WYSIWYDG here:

You might like HTML-Kit. It has syntax highlighting, no WYSIWYG (but
there's a WYSIWYG table plugin for that), integrates with TopStyle, has
HTML-Tidy built in, FTP, code completion (or your can turn it off),
create/save your own snippets, create/save your own templates. One of
the best things about it is there are hundreds of user created plugins
available to make your work easier - and you can create/share your own
plugins.
There are two versions, the free one, and the paid one. I like the free
one better because I've been using it for several years, and use a lot
of plugins with it. The newer version doesn't understand/can't import
the old plugins, so I'm staying with the older version - until they can
figure out how to import all my old plugins.

WeBuilder is similar to HomeSite, not freeware but it does have a trial.
Not a memory hog like Homesite is nor as expensive.
