Are you referring to the amount of bloat, or the number of errors?
14K errors does sound like a record, but I've seen much worse bloat than
that.

I have a 205K HTML file from Publisher that was rewritten to about 6K,
but my favorite was a 9K email generated by Word for a 100 character
message. :)

Was referring to the number of errors. Word won't win the Bloat Game;
that's reserved for MS Publisher. <g>

I seem to remember the worst I personally saw at the Validator was
somewhere around three-and-half-thousand on a page.

I have Pub 97 on the old Winbox, and had experimented with it producing
HTML. Relatively speaking, it wasn't too bad for bloat. It does seem,
however, that the more/most recent versions have gone to Bloat Hell.

That too ... <g>

Nahh. I had something like 5400 for my first go at the validator - but
got it down to zero after about 4 hours.

Har! Was it a Publisher page? Word? It is hard to envision (for those
who hand-code) what could be so wrong with a page that causes three- and
four-digit error counts.

You knew what you were doing, or you dumped your WYSIWYG app. :-)

:-)

No, it was quite a long page generated using PHP reading data from our
mysql database. The data is tabular, so I use tables. I validated
against strict so there were a number of things I was unaware of, but
the validator was quite good in giving hints.

Really, this page needs to be redone with tabs or something since there
are some 20 tables with many rows and columns, but I haven't got a round
tuit yet, so I can't.

The whole exercise was quite instructive and I learnt a lot (had to
consult our webmaster on some points), and improved the look by using
more css. It pushed me towards referencing my new(ish) css/html book
more, which I had been avoiding in favour of a rather older book,
because the type is smaller.

What's interesting is that even if I tidy up all the 200 or so existing
pages, I'm gonna have to use strict, transitional, and frameset if I
want the validator to be happy.
