LCD suddenly went dark.. The HP service center wants $900 to fix (cost was
$1800 new -- 17" screen). On the fence on this one.

Older Toshiba Satellite, aside from batteries lasting for maybe an hour and
a half (when new) and giving up in one year, their Ultra-Bright LCD screen
has gotten very dim and the internal modem gave up in two years, but the
computer is still useable through the VGA port.

This laptop stuff just doesn't last and is extremely expensive to fix (like
$150 estimates just to look at them).

Anyone know of a brand that can run two years or more and not have problems
as HP and Toshiba? These are used in multimedia and are often left running
24 hours.

Tia.

There are other places that might be able to fix it. Or if you bought
it with a gold or platinum credit card or an Amex card, you may have
gotten an automatic extended warranty from the card company.

I have a Dell laptop which is approaching three years old with no problems.

The backlight may be bad. Probably wouldn't be excessive to fix.

try connection to a regular monitor and if that works it rules out the
graphics card.

IBM Thinkpad!

Sounds like either the backlight or inverter has gone on your system. What's
your approximate geographic location, there are several places that can
repair your unit for a reasonable amount of $$.
