We are testing out the HP 6515 mobile messenger. We had wanted the 6900 but
it has not been released in Canada. I realize that the 6515 does not have
WM5.0 but 2003 SE...how does this limit us? Can we still setup a near real
time email delivery? We are looking at moving away from our blackberry
devices in stages and would like to start with the HP ipaq's.

Any info appreciated.

If you have anything less than WM 5.0 w/ MSFP and Exchange 2003 w/ SP2, you
are limited to using the old SMS method of getting email delivered to the
device from an Exchange Server. It's not all that bad really, except fot
the fact that it uses SMS to initiate the process, which essentially means
that it counts as a text message on your cell carrier's service plan every
time an email comes in.

Basically how it works is the Exchange Server sends an SMS message to the
device whenever a new item is delivered into that users Exchange folder
(Email, Calendar or Contacts). When the device receives that message, it
then triggers ActiveSync and syncs with the server to pick up the new item.

Depending on your cell carrier, it may not be a big deal as long as you can
get enough text messages to cover the anticipated monthly usage. I know
that Verizon was offering 2,000 messages per month free for users that
specifically had Windows Mobile devices, but you had to call customer
support and ask for them.

The other option would be to schedule ActiveSync on the device to
automatically check with the Exchange Server every so often (5 minutes, 10
minutes, etc.) This option would not use the SMS messages, but you aren't
going to be quite as "real time" obviously. There are two different
schedules for peak and off-peak, so you could have it check every 5 minutes
during business hours for example, and then only every hour or two during
off-times.

Hope that helps....

Thanks for the reply!

We will probably wait for the HP 6900 as it includes the WM5.0...will setup
the demo for scheduled sync for now as we would get charged for SMS
messages...
