I have an Acer 1644 wlmi Laptop/Notebook which came with a Toshiba 100GB
MK1031GAS HDD (pata) and I want to upgrade to a Samsung 160GB (HM160HC)
5400rpm ATA100 HDD, mainly for extra space. Would there be any
incompatibility issues I might encounter?

I have checked the physical dimensions on the existing drive with the
ones specified for the Samsung one and they seem to be identical. I
intend to buy from an online store for better price reasons and they
have no return policy for bad/wrong choice, thus I thought to double
check with the experts on this newsgroup.

Samsung Specifications:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-HM160HC-5400rpm-ATA100-Notebook/dp/B000Z4C0M2

My intended purchse source: http://www.mwave.com.au/

Samsung HM160HC, 160GB, ATA100, 8MB Cache, 5400RPM, 3-year Warranty,
Mwave SKU No: 22020053
Model#: HM160HC
Availability
Online Warehouse: Yes
Dispatch: 1-3 days
Price: $96.30

Thanks in advance for any advice,
Peter

You should be fine. In general, with respect to laptop hard drives, if
they fit and have the same interface, they are ok. One very
occasionally sees heat/power issues, but that is very much the exception
rather than the rule.

There should be no problem at all. Note that the new drive will not have
the adapter for your notebook so you will have to remove the adapter
from the old drive to reuse on the new drive. These usually just pull
off, but there could be screws.
