I took me a long time to work this one out. Even if you only have one Outlook
profile, activesync detects the difference between when outlook is started
with the default profile and when it is started with a named profile, even if
it is the only profile. If you install activesync after you have started
outlook with a /profile parameter then activesync wont sync properly when
outlook has been started with no /profile parameter by relying on the default
profile setting. What an unreasonable pain.
I started having problems because I automatically shut down outlook to
backup pst files every night. The outlook restart used the default profile.
If I rebooted or closed and opened outlook duting the day, the startup and
desktop shortcuts started outlook with /profile "Outlook". Because activesync
was installed when outlook had been started with /profile "Outlook" after the
restart at night activesync always failed with the 8503001f. I changed the
backup script restart to use /profile "Outlook" and now all is well.
Not very nice one Microsoft.
