I've been using PHPBB on my sites for a long time now, and it seems lately,
I am having trouble with performance, even on smaller forums.
I was wondering what forum software other use, as I am contemplating giving
something else a try?

Crikey, is that a sig or a billboard you're carrying there?!
I use PHPBB too, does a pretty good job considering it's free. How do you
know it's that that is slow, and not some other factor?

Running phpbb on your site is asking for trouble. It is very unsecure and
many sites have been defaced.
I myself use vbulletin.

my favourite discussion board is invision power board.
http://www.invisionboard.com
It looks really nice and is full of great features.
I also like YaBB/YabbSe boards. But I do know of one or two folk who had
diffs with server performance in handling that board.
I'd recommend Invision.
PS - Viper, good call re VBulletin. I chat on a friend's VBulletin board
and it is very neat. It's a great little board and is ideal for customer
support/interaction etc.
