Hi All

I have a shapefile of road links, but no data on the name of the road
the link represents.

Would it be possible to import my shapefile into Google Earth (or
equivalent website), so that
each link (represented as a line or arc) would overlay the Google
Earth roads?

Could i then extract the Road name/number that the link is running
along?

Thanks for any help

Nigel

Perhaps. If you can find such a website that allows uploading of shp files.
It is more likely you can find a desktop application that makes it possible
to have Google Maps running as a background layer. Just like Google Earth.

If you are able to extract the road names from the Google bitmap, but it
would almost certainly be against the license terms. Also remember not every
section on a map may show the name.

Generally it sounds like a waste of time. It is illegal and not likely to
ever generate any good results.

I didnt realise that it was illegal, and i can see that getting good
results would be tricky. However, if it was legal and possible it
would be very useful to me! i have found a way of converting the road
network and overlaying it in Google Earth (which is legal i think).

If anyone has found an alternate solution to attaining road names/
numbers for a GIS road network then i would be very grateful if they
could suggest a solution. I really only need to get the roads names
for those links with significant traffic flows (eg motorway, A road
and B road), so if a road doesnt have a name then i probably dont need
it anyway.

It needs to be automated because there are thousands of links.

Thanks for getting back to me.

May be you could consider to use the Open Street Map Project, which may
deliver road names, but only if the users have entered them. This may
not be a 100% solution, that is your decision :)

Best regards, Stefan

First part is possible: you can overlay your roads on the Google Earth
roads. Just create a KML file from your shape-file and load that one
into Google Earth. Tools to create KML files are either available
through your GIS or free tools (example: shp2kml from
http://www.zonums.com/ seems to do the trick). Just make sure your data
is in a coordinate system recognised by the conversion software. Upload
your KML file to a server and you can also use Google Maps as a viewer.

Extracting the names/numbers from Google is much more difficult, if not
impossible....
