2 questions w/ 2 problems in XP Media Center involving defrag & chkdsk:
1) attempted to run chkdsk from the command prompt with no success due
to the error message: cannot open volume for direct access; 2) now
when I attempt to run defrag I get the error message: disk
defragmenter has detected that check disk has been scheduled to run.
Please run check disk. Now I am stuck in this loop because I can't get
check disk to run. What do I do now? Have tried suggestions I have
discovered here but nothing has gotten chkdsk to run. I need help.

Reboot. CHKDSK will run before the OS loads.

Sensei,
I believe if you re-boot the computer, the check disk will run during the
boot up process, after that you will be able to run the disk defrag.

Download, burn, then boot to Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable
live windows
CD/DVD, and run chkdsk from there. http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
