For those interested in web GIS, Google mashups, and spatial modeling
you should check-out www.cleerimpact.com. CLEER Impact is a freely-
available public information tool. Using Google=E2=84=A2 Maps API and power=
ful
analysis capabilities, CLEER Impact lets anyone, anywhere, model and
visualize what could happen in a variety of emergencies; Hazmat
incidents that release chemical vapour into the air, tire or
petrochemical fires that produce harmful smoke, and nuclear generating
station incidents that discharge contaminated steam. This google
mashup allows a user to set the inputs and run a numerical model on a
cluster of high-speed processors with the results are returned to the
user as KML and GPolygon overlays onto Google Maps. Once a result is
on the map, they can toggle layers on or off, see if there address is
in the impact zone, or view the polygons in Google Earth. Users can
also look at scenarios other people have run. For example, somebody
modeled the propane spill that happened in Oneida NY a few weeks ago
