Hi, we've testing a Windows Mobile 5.0 device, and there is a check in the
email setup section called "Attempt to obtain e-mail settings from the
Internet",
when you check this option the mobile try to obtain pop3 server name and
smtp server name. And it's works (at least in some cases: gmail, terra etc.),
and also, it's works only with giving the email address!!

My question is... how does it do?
some kind of DNS query to the domain part of the email address?
brute force?
or ...?
Thanks to the answerer!!

It connects to a special DB which is hosted for Microsoft by a 3rd party
vendor. They collect these information and from the domain of your E-Mail
address, they know which server to provide. No brut force, no miracle, just
a collection of servers.

Ok! Thanks Arne! Could you tell us who is the 3rd party name? We need to talk
to them in order to correct some server domain/name errors.
Thanks again!

I can point you to the correct contact. Remove "online" from my email
address. Thanks.
