Is any one else seeing sites getting good and great results by simply
putting up an exact copy of their site and linking it to the other?

I am seeing a duplicate content site at #1 in one of my SERPs and it's
bloody hard to beat!

I see another rising up the same SERP using a very similar tactic. I
have always been wary of linking any of my sites that are too similar
together but some have no problem with it at all.

I thought google spam filters were better than they are.

Jez.

www. thehousesignstudio.co.uk/

www. shopcreator.com/mall/TheHouseSignStudio

http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0geu78XtGJIiJEAZtBXNyoA?p=site%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fshopcreator.com%2Fmall%2FTheHouseSignStudio+%22www.thehousesignstudio.co.uk%22&y=Search&fr=moz2&ei=UTF-8

This, and seemingly this reason alone has put the site to the top of
google for house signs

The only other links going to it are pretty rubbishy directories - there
is one or two decent links but not many.

Content replication is still in fancy as an SEO trick, especially in
international keyphrase competitions. Others are trying to master the
English language but resort to throwing together a mish and mash of
other stuff and they try to make it look like it is reasonable
advertising of the service or product.

I'm not surprised it's popular - seems to work like a dream!
