Perhaps the email address on file for you was invalid? I don't know
anything about this Google Apps stuff but Godaddy was/is your registrar
and I know for a fact that Godaddy sends out multiple notices at 90, 60
and 30 days--and probably 14, 5 and 1 days as well, though I never let
it get that close before renewing.
At any rate, you are responsible for insuring that your domain
registrations don't expire--not to mention insuring that your contact
info is correct.
Now you have to bite the bullet, pay what they want and redo all your
settings. Let this be a lesson to you.
