Disk Sharing, Network hjl 04-11-2006

I have added a third computer to the workgroup and tried to share its disk
with no success. There are 3 computers attached to a linksys router to the
outside world. Computer "A" runs Windows 2000 Service pak 4. Computer "B"
runs Windows XP Pro Service pak 2. Computer "C", the new one, runs Windows
XP Media Center. There is disk sharing between "A" & "B" and it works fine.
I can ping between "A" & "B" both ways using either IP address or net work
name. When pinging "C" from "A" or "B" using IP or net work name they both
time out. When pinging either "A" or "B" from "C" using IP address they
both reply. When pinging "A" or "B" from "C" using network name they both
time out. "C" has the Windows firewall disabled. How can I set "C" up to be
able to share the hard drive with the other two computers in the workgroup?

Does computer C recognize that your NIC is installed? When looking at the
device manager, does your NIC have a Yellow Queston mark on it? If so you
need to install the driver for it.

Next, I would check would be the IP address of computer C. Is Computer C
within the same subnet as A and B? Does it have a like IP address as the
other two? Is the Router giving computer C an IP address? Can computer C ping
the outside world?

You state that
from A or B you cannot ping C at all
from C you cannot ping A or B using name
from C you CAN ping using IP address

Assuming I read that right, it looks like your problem is with name
resolution. I am guessing that your Linksys router is where your computers
are getting their IP/gateway/DNS addresses from, so you would need to check
it's configuration.

You didn't list the IP addresses of your computers so I can only guess, but
you should check to make sure they have IP addresses that are on the same
network. Without giving a huge explanation, the ip addresses:
192.168.100.1
192.168.100.3
192.168.100.18
are all probably on the same network. But 10.1.1.65 is not.

also make sure that C has file and printer sharing checked. (this is in the
Properties area of the network connection)

I think it is resolved. I noticed that C had Norton Firewall Internet
Security automatically started at boot (provided a firewall). I changed this
to a manual start and rebooted. All computers communicate with each other
and disk are shared. Ran additional test to get problem back and then get
rid of it. Everything seems to being working properly.
