Hi, all,

I've got a question. I've been using Debian Linux on my VPS's, and am
pretty happy with it.

However, I've got one VPS which has a LOT of customization - everything
from Exim to PHP. Even PAM is MySQL based...

As a result, maintenance is getting more difficult because of the way
Debian ties everything together. I can't just use the Debian
maintenance because it wipes out necessary configurations.

So I'm looking for recommendations for a different distro. What I need
is one which allows me to update the basic Linux system, but install and
configure my own Apache, PHP, MySQL, Exim, etc.

Anyone got a suggestion as to which would be a good distro, before I go
off to the Linux groups (and possibly start a religious war :-) )?

Ubuntu has a server edition that comes with LAMP and a lot of other
stuff ready to go.

It is stripped down to command-line for user interface, but you
can add that in easily if you want.

Thanks, but that's exactly what I don't want. I'll install my own
Apache, MySQL and PHP, along with everything else. All I want is the
base OS.

You could just download a Kernel. See

http://www.linux.org/dist/download_info.html

For de facto advice.

Or failing that, distributions such as Red Hat and Mandrake allow you
to easily select which packages you want to install, ergo, only
install the parts you want, and then later install your own versions
of these other packages.

Thanks, Matt, but unfortunately, I can't install a kernel. This is a
VPS and I have no physical access to it. The hosting company will
install most distros, but I need to to get far enough to have a bootable
system with networking (telnet/ssh) running.

As for Red Hat and Mandrake - they still have the same problem. There
is a dependency between a minimal set of packages - which is what's
causing my current problem.
