My Pocket PC (HP iPAQ hw6945) inexplicably stopped syncing a few days ago.
When connected, the laptop (Sony VAIO TR3A) recognizes a Windows CE USB
device but Active Sync 4.5 won't connect or detect it. I've gone thru the
troubleshooting guides on Microsoft as well as helpful sites on the web to no
avail. Here's what I've done to try and remedy the situation:

-Rebooted both devices multiple times. I haven't done a hard reset on the
PDA because I don't want to lose data.
-Uninstalled and reinstalled 4.5 at least twice. I just installed 4.2 to
try and mix things up. No dice
-Removed virus software (Symantec)
-Configured Windows Firewall to allow ports listed in Microsoft
troubleshooting guide
-Removed newish programs that I thought might be conflicting
-Tried to "repair" both 4.5 and 4.2 ActiveSync using Add/Remove new programs
utility. During the "validating installation" portion of the repair, I get
the following error "Internal Error 2356. ActiveSync cab." and it fails to
continue.

I don't know what else to do. Please help!

Thanks,
Tiffany

Sounds like you might have the same problem as I do.

Do you get an error saying:

"Cannot verify the version of ActiveSync on your device. A program such
as a firewall may be blocking a port ActiveSync uses to connect to the
device, or you may need to upgrade to a more recent version od
ActiveSync on the PC"

Check out my post from yesterday for details.

I think your device is a Windows Mobile 5 device. In that case I have no
solution for you.

Had it been en older OSm there is an easy solution.

I will explain it here in case otheres with older systems read this.

Downgrade ActiveSync to 3.8
You can find it here.
http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/syncsoft/activesync/

I found this solution on this forum
http://forums.pocketpcfaq.com/viewtopic.php?p=48248&sid=c681955f45e3e6259712d5c58b01e98e

The short version is:
uninstall AS 4.5
delete c:\windows\system32\rapi.dll
delete c:\windows\system32\ceutils.dll

install AS 3.8

This worked for me on some older devices.
I have not tried with a WM5 device yet, but those are not supposed to
work with AS 3.8.

I hope someone can help us with a solution for WM5 devices.

I'm not sure if my solution is the best one (I certainly don't recommend it
because it was time consuming) but I got a bluetooth adapter, copied whatever
data/contacts I could using the generic file transfer feature of bluetooth
and then executed a hard reset. This wiped out all of my data and probably
erased whatever was causing the problem. I can now sync with ActiveSync 4.5.
I REALLY didn't like this solution but my device works now.
