Dell battery life? Maurice ON4BAM 05-04-2007

Hi,

I'm in for a new laptop and will probably get the Dell Inspiron 6400
with T7200 (2GHz) CPU, 2GB 667MHz RAM, and 160GB HD. What would be the
expected battery time form the 6 or 9 cell battery. I guess I'll go
for the 9cell anyway but maybe the 6 cell would do also.

I'm also open to suggestions about similar laptops in the same
pricerange that might be a better choice. I'm in Europe (Belgium) so
sub US$1000 will not cut it :-(

The 9 cell batteries are annoying. Unless you really need the longer run
time, stick with the 6 cell battery.

Personally, I think the Latitude series is worth the extra money over
the Inspiron series.

What's annoying about them? Battery life is rather important.

Have you seen the prices on the Dell Euro sites ? Latitude is above my
budget (it's not going to be the main computer, just for holidays and
as extra PC when the other PCs are in use)

Here is how I do it. Battery specifications often also list their
watt-hour (Whr) capacity along with the number of cells. A 9 cell
battery may not last 9/6 times as long as a 6 cell battery because the
"cells" may not have the same capacity. Use the ration of Whr
specifications to get a better idea of battery life.

For example if you have a 50 Whr battery that has a 200 minute life then
a 80 Whr battery will give you 200 x (80/50) = 320 minutes of life.

I know how to calculate the difference so that brings back the
original question: How long will a battery last in the above
configuration?
