Hi everyone,

I just bought my wife a used Dell CxpH 500 running 98SE. The only
untoward thing about it is the sound of the fan is surprisingly loud.
It doesn't run all the time, of course, and it's not a major issue; I
just wonder whether it might be worthwhile replacing it. My other
laptop is a venerable 560 Thinkpad. Very quiet. But it doesn't have a
Pentium III processor, either;-)

Do not delay replacing the fan: this noise may be the sign it has
outlasted its useful life and this should not be an expensive proposition.

I've seen new ones (the part includes the CPU heatsink) on
eBay for $15.

The fan noise on my own CPxH is not very noticeable so you
might be having a problem with yours.

FYI, the CPx is one of the most easily upgraded laptops
around. I've upgraded the CPU on my original 500MHz
machine twice. First to a 650MHz Celeron. Then I
discovered that it was possible to flash the BIOS to make it
a CPxJ so it could run the faster P3 speedstep processors.
Now it has an 850MHz processor (runs at 700MHz on battery).
I also upgraded to XP (no problems, having ClearType font
support is worth the expense by itself) and a 5400 RPM hard
drive.
