Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop won't boot on AC power supply

I have to wiggle the cord to get the computer to recognise that it is plugged in, but in the right position it has been working fine. However, now it won't boot with the power supply plugged in. When I try to turn it on, the power light comes on for a few seconds and then turns off. Nothing else happens. It will still charge when turned off, and boots fine without the power supply plugged in. Is this just the power jack getting worse? Since the broken power jack just might not be able to handle the turn on power drain anymore.
