I just reinstalled WinXP Pro on my Inspiron 8500. I installed it with
the laptop undocked and all is well. I even installed the Dell
Notebook System Software. When I dock the laptop, my CD/DVD drive
(Matshita UJDA740) ceases to appear in My Computer, Device Manager,
Explorer, etc. The Secondary IDE Channel also starts to show an IRQ
conflict with COM1. Manually changing COM1's IRQ and/or disabling it
don't have any effect. Dell says that the dock (PR01X) is defective.
However, my dock works on the laptops at work, and a known good dock
from work, doesn't work with my laptop. In reading the forums at
support.dell.com, I see several others with this issue, but no
resolution. I'm going to try to delete the upper and lower filters in
the registry this afternoon when I get home. Does anyone have any
other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

This is just a WORK around.
Change the Driver for the COM port to be a Standard Printer. This
will free up any IRQs, and then the Secondary IDE Controller will
work. I know this is a Dell problem, and this is NOT a solution, it's
just a workaround if you don't use your COM port very often.
