How can I tell if I have a Synaptics touchpad or one made by ALPS
without opening the case? Is there any harm in loading the wrong
driver to see if it works?

Don't suppose it would hurt to install Synaptics drivers. You can always

Dell support only lists the ALPS drivers for the Inspiron 8200.
