Got the above laptop. The background light on the screen doesn't seem
to be working. I can barely see the words, etc on the screen and the
screen is almost totally dark. Tried to adjust contrast to no avail.
Currently at the utmost setting. Contacted Dell Support and they had
me make sure the cable was pushed all the way in which I did. I
connected an external monitor and it worked fine. It's not that the
screen is switched off (by holding down alt or ctrl and pressing one
of the f keys - support already thought about that). Any ideas?
Thanks.

Dell Support didn't mention anything about the backlight? A backlight
should (key word here is should) be reasonable to find and replace. Dell
should have one, no problem.

I don't think Dell sells backlights separately. AFAIK you need to buy the
whole LCD assembly if you need a new backlight.

But there are lots of 3rd party suppliers for backlights.

At one point, my laptop screen was way off colour (very red). I sent it
back to the manufacturer and they said that the backlight was finished.
They managed to find a used one and it only cost me about $100 Cdn. A
new screen was much more than the machine was worth.
If you can find a good electronic technician, not necessarily in a
computer shop, he might be able to help you. If not, you may have a
desktop laptop.

Sounds like a bad backlight, which could be either the lamps themselves
or the inverter that powers them. It could also be a setting in the
software that sets the inverter brightness, I'd think Dell would have
gone through that with you. If it's the lamps or inverter, it's a
service problem, it needs to go to a Dell service center or have someone
come onsite to repair it.
