I have a Dell Inspiron 4000 that I got for free. When I got the
computer, I was told that the only thing wrong with it was a
"flaky" hard drive. Up until this point I have had little
to no trouble with the HD, however, I can't get the cd-rom drive to
work, at all. Windows XP recognizes that there is a cd-rom drive,
but fails to see a cd in the drive. When you put a disc into the
drive it shows the cd icon for half a second then disappears,
forever, or until you put another cd in. I've tried uninstalling the
drive, and reinstalling, I've tried Windows update. I can't figure it
out....any ideas other than to walk my happy lil ass to best buy and
get a new rom drive?

you could try uninstalling the cdrom in the device manager and reboot it
might come back but it sounds like the drive is bad. just a guess

Pull the drive out and put in the floppy (if you have one)

Change slots with the battery.

Try both hot swapping and re-booting (in between)

Blow out the connections on the back of the drive of any possible
dirt/dust particles.

Thats about all i would try to rule it out either as a dead drive/and
or software issue.
